EPCOT — Denise Palmer, mother of four and self-declared authority on World Showcase cultural authenticity, announced Monday that Mexico is her favorite pavilion — and she would like everyone to know it has nothing to do with the margaritas.
“It’s the atmosphere,” she said, from inside the pyramid, slightly louder than necessary. “The lighting in here. The marketplace. The whole… ” she paused to take a long pull from a cup the size of a small trophy ” … feeling of it.”
The family had arrived at the Mexico pavilion around 11 a.m. They have not left.
Palmer’s appreciation for the pavilion’s cultural richness deepened noticeably around her second drink, at which point she began describing the indoor artificial sky as “one of the most moving things she had ever seen,” purchased a ceramic jaguar because it had “good energy,” and told her youngest that this was the kind of place that “changes you.”
Her husband Mark confirmed that Denise has, in fact, always loved the Mexico pavilion.
“She does love it,” he said. “Sometimes I just drop her off here and go do my own thing for the day. I’ll come back toward the end of the day and pick her up to head back to the resort. It’s kinda like mommy daycare. I’m just happy she’s so passionate about another culture.”
When asked about the blood orange margarita currently in her hand, Palmer clarified that she had ordered it specifically because blood orange is historically significant to pre-Columbian culinary traditions, a claim she delivered with complete sincerity and no follow-up evidence.
The family made one attempt to suggest moving on to Norway for Frozen Ever After, which Palmer dismissed on the grounds that Norway “hasn’t earned it yet.” She then proposed riding Gran Fiesta Tour again, which she calls “the little Donald Duck tequila tunnel.”
By mid-afternoon, Palmer had declared Mexico not just her favorite pavilion but “the emotional core of the entire park,” reorganized the family’s remaining EPCOT itinerary to include two additional Mexico stops, and entered into a lengthy conversation with a pavilion cast member about the architectural significance of Mesoamerican pyramid design that the cast member was clearly not prepared for.
The ceramic jaguar is now being carried by Mark.
At press time, Palmer had announced she wanted to “do one more lap” of the marketplace before the family left, a statement that fooled no one, as the margarita stand is also on that lap, and she had already scoped the route.
