ORLANDO, FL — A vacationer attempting to fly home from Orlando International Airport reportedly spent 17 increasingly confusing hours inside Disney’s Contemporary Resort on Tuesday after concluding that its dated architecture, concrete-heavy interior, and elevated monorail track meant it was “obviously some kind of terminal.”
“I knew my flight was out of Terminal C, but I figured maybe the airport had rebranded,” said traveler Mark Ellison, who arrived at the Contemporary shortly after checking out of his Disney resort. “There were big open spaces, people dragging luggage, signs everywhere, strange overhead announcements, and a train coming directly through the building. Frankly, it made more sense than half the airports I’ve been in.”
Ellison said he became slightly concerned when he could not locate a TSA checkpoint, gate agent, baggage drop, or actual plane. But he assumed the airport was “doing one of those Orlando things” and waited near the fourth-floor concourse while repeatedly checking his phone for boarding updates. At one point, he reportedly studied a restaurant menu for several minutes, trying to determine whether “Chef Mickey’s” meant his flight was delayed, boarding, or being diverted.
“I did think it was weird that everybody was wearing matching shirts and eating Mickey-shaped waffles,” Ellison said. “But I’ve flown Spirit before. Nothing surprises me.”
Hotel staff reportedly tried several times to explain that the building was Disney’s Contemporary Resort, not an airport terminal, but Ellison remained unconvinced until a cast member pointed out that the train passing through the structure was a monorail and not, as he believed, “a very small airport shuttle with unusually cheerful passengers.”
The Contemporary, which opened with Walt Disney World in 1971, has long been praised for its bold modernist design, monorail access, and ability to make first-time guests briefly wonder whether they have entered a luxury hotel, a convention center, or the headquarters of a regional electric company.
Disney representatives confirmed that the resort remains deliberately themed around the future as imagined 50 years ago.
“Yes, it is dated,” one representative said. “No, you cannot update concrete. And yes, the monorail still goes through the middle of it. That part is apparently non-negotiable.”
Ellison eventually reached Orlando International Airport several hours after his flight departed. He has since booked another trip to Disney World, saying he would like to stay at “that airport hotel with the cool train.”
